Red Cross Pharmacy
The History of Red Cross Pharmacy

Red Cross Pharmacy began as a single store located in the small river town of Miami, Missouri in 1854. In 1879, Red Cross Pharmacy moved its entire operation to Marshall, Missouri after a major fire wiped out most of the small town. At that time, Red Cross Pharmacy relocated to the space it still occupies today on the Marshall Square.

Through the late 1800's and into the mid-20th century, ownership exchanged hands several times until the Hartwig family purchased a controlling interest in Red Cross Pharmacy in 1971. Another store was soon opened in Marshall in 1975 and another in nearby Salisbury in 1980. Heartland Medical Equipment, Inc. was established in 1988 to meet the home service needs of our local patients.

A growing number of loyal customers led the company to continue to expand in the late 1990s. Significant growth came between 1998 and 2003 with the addition of retail pharmacy locations in Kearney, Excelsior Springs, Odessa, Warrensburg, Grain Valley and Oak Grove, Missouri. In 2004, Red Cross Long Term Care Pharmacy was created to meet the unique needs of our long term care patients.

Today the family-run company consists of eleven retail pharmacies, two long term care pharmacies, and a home medical equipment company with retail store locations in nine Missouri towns servicing thirteen counties in the northwest central part of the state.
